THE COLLECTIVE CLICHE
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this project, students used photographic images to represent the ideal cliché of landscape, still life, and portraiture. They then worked on top of (and through) those images, using embroidery to make lines and marks investigating the visual and conceptual weight of color; all the while pushing against the ideas of cliché. Upon completing their individual collections of embroidered images, students proposed and executed a collaborative installation.
IMAGE, LANGUGE, OBJECT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
AI generators, like Dall-E, rely on pre-programmed data points to help them make the best possible guess in response to whatever prompt/question/input you give it. Its goal is to get as close as possible to giving you what you ask for but can only do this by making educated guesses - imagining what you need.
For this project, students used a variety of digital and analog technologies, including Google Image search, digital collage, creative writing, AI generation, and non-traditional bookbinding to deeply investigate an object of their choosing. Looking to Joseph Kosuth's One and Three Chairs as reference, students moved through the space of image, language, and object to expand their understanding, both real and imagined.
100 SQUARES
Adapted From Marco Rosichelli, University of Central Missouri
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this project, students were tasked with a creating a series of 100 finished 4”x4” drawings using a variety of wet and dry media, as well as a range of drawing implements. Students focused on exploring the Elements + Principles of design, creating larger drawings before using a viewfinder to locate more precise compositions. The most successful 16 drawings were then assembled into a shared composition - an exercise in critical editing and Gestalt principles.
PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY: EXPERIENCE THROUGH CUT PAPER
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this assignment, students were tasked with utilizing map-making and cut-paper to convey their experience of a location of their choosing. We explored Psychogeography, balancing our focus on both environmental and experiential details. Students built out their compositions while thinking specifically about Visual Hierarchy and Emphasis.
PHOTOCOPY COLLAGE
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this assignment, students worked with collage and the visual element of “value” to see how broad a dark to light range, and how interesting images can be achieved utilizing photocopy machine(s). Using the technique of collage, students created exacting replicas of their photocopied hands. Through creating one black and white and one monochromatic collage, students engaged the nuance of color value.
